Nine Stony Brook Students Receive Prestigious Fulbright Scholarships

SerranoRoberto Serrano

Hometown: Astoria Queens, NY
Degree: 2019 BS in Physics and Mathematics

Departmental advisors/research mentors: Nathan Leigh, Jeremy Webb, Rosalba Perna

Serrano was selected for a Fulbright Research Award to Chile. He will study the origins of super massive black holes in the centers of galaxies. While it is believed that most of the mass growth is by gas flows in the centers of galaxies, dynamical mergers with other black holes is also an efficient growth mechanism. His project will use analytic models and numerical simulations to analyze the fate of black holes in dense star cluster environments.
