Gyre: Creating Art from a Plastic Ocean
Stony Brook University research professor Carl Safina is featured in National Geographic’s, “Gyre: Creating Art from a Plastic Ocean,” a 20-minute video that tracks the recent journey of Expedition Gyre, a 14-member international team of scientists, artists and educators studying the global marine debris crisis in southwest Alaska.
Gyre is a collaboration between the Anchorage Museum and Alaska SeaLife Center in partnership with several national and Alaska-based organizations. Safina, also founding president of Blue Ocean Institute, headed the June 2013 expedition with Howard Ferren from the Alaska SeaLife Center. Gyre also includes representatives from the Smithsonian Institution, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Geographic, Alaska Marine Stewardship Foundation, Anchorage Museum and Ocean Conservancy.
The team investigated the buildup of marine debris washing out of the great gyres, or currents, in the Pacific Ocean with the goal of creating art from the trash they find to raise awareness about its impact on oceans and wildlife. The artwork will become part of a traveling exhibition, which will begin at the Anchorage Museum in February 2014.
