Stony Brook University is hosting this year’s National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) Region 1 Conference November 9 through November 11 at the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead, New York.
NIRSA, made up of higher education recreation/athletics departments nationwide, supports leaders in collegiate recreation. The organization is divided into six regions, and Stony Brook is a member of Region 1, which includes several states in the Northeast.
“Campus Recreation put a bid in to host the conference back in 2013, and we won,” said Campus Recreation Director Jay Souza, who is also the conference chair. “It’s pretty exciting for us since it’s never been to Long Island before. It will also solidify Stony Brook’s position as a leader among New York institutions in Campus Recreation.”
Since its founding in 1950, NIRSA membership has grown to nearly 4,500 dedicated professionals, students and businesses, serving an estimated 8.1 million students. NIRSA members support students’ learning and growth by fostering lifelong habits of wellbeing.
“We have been planning and organizing this conference for the past two years, and we are eagerly anticipating the event,” Souza added. “So far we’ve got more than 300 participants registered to attend.”
