Demian Chapman, an assistant professor in Stony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, is leading a scientific research expedition in the Bahamian Shark Sanctuary. His team is conducting groundbreaking research on the movements and behavior patterns of some of the most endangered and threatened shark species in an attempt to better understand and protect them.

Christine O’Connell, a science communication professional at the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science in Stony Brook University’s School of Journalism, blogs about their experiences each day from the Bahamas. O’Connell is a marine and environmental scientist with an extensive interdisciplinary background in policy, outreach and communication.

The Moore Charitable Foundation began funding this research expedition to the Bahamas in 2013.
