New music for strings

Expanding Tradition — Imagining the Future

new music for stringsNew Music for Strings, a collaboration between faculty from the Department of Music at Stony Brook University and faculty at the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, Denmark, is a new festival concept that brings together highly skilled performers and composers from both sides of the Atlantic to work with top faculty.

The first festival will take place in Denmark on August 23 through August 31, with several graduate students from Stony Brook attending. A preview concert will be held at the Scandinavia House in New York City on Thursday, May 26, at 7:30 pm (visit the website for tickets). Exploring Scandinavian and American contemporary traditions and their roots is at the heart of all programs and events.

The faculty includes performers, composers and theorists with outstanding expertise in string instrument performance, composition and contemporary scholarship as part of a unique interdisciplinary environment. Participating faculty from Stony Brook include Anne Sophie Andersen, violinist, composer and artistic director; Eugene Drucker and Philip Setzer, violinists, Emerson String Quartet; and Judith Lochhead, professor of music history and theory.

The festival will feature masterclasses in chamber music and composition as well as lectures, lecture recitals and composer workshops — all open for participants and audiences. Composers will have their works read and recorded by the quartet in residence while performers will collaborate with faculty in more than 10 concerts.
