President Stanley Participates in Time Summit on Higher Education

Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, joined other leaders from higher education, state and federal government, philanthropy, and business for the Time Summit on Higher Education at the Time Warner Center in New York City on September 19 and September 20 to discuss the American university as driver of research and education for the nation. “Are We Losing the Knowledge Wars?” focused on threats to the university’s continued excellence and ideas for innovation and reinvention to meet the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.

President Stanley participated in a panel discussion on “Preparing the Next Generation of Faculty Researchers and Teachers” with Thomas Mason, Director, Oak Ridge National Laboratory; Peter McPherson, President, Association of Public and Land-grant Universities; and Phyllis Wise, Chancellor, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher also attended the summit and participated in a panel discussion that focused on “Challenges of Governing the 21st-Century Research University: Trustees and Faculty Members. Is the Current Governance Model a Hindrance or a Help?”

Featured speakers included New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, University of Oklahoma President and politician David Boren, Purdue University President and politician Mitch Daniels, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Former U.S. Secretary of State General Colin Powell, Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and TIME’s Editor-at-Large Fareed Zakaria.
