Michael Kimmel Honored by UN Women as Champion of Change

As International Women’s Day is celebrated at UN headquarters in New York City today, leading expert on men and masculinities Michael Kimmel, Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Gender Studies at Stony Brook University, has been named one of UN Women’s 2018 Champions of Change. UN Women is the United Nations entity dedicated to advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women.

Kimmel received this distinction for his many significant contributions to women’s empowerment and gender equality. He is founder and executive director of the Center for Men and Masculinities at Stony Brook, as well as an author, speaker and advocate for gender equality.

Kimmel is the author of Manhood in America, Angry White Men, The Politics of Manhood, The Gendered Society, Guyland, and a new book, Healing from Hate: How Young Men Get Into and Out of Violent Extremism. A tireless advocate of engaging men to support gender equality, he has lectured at more than 300 colleges, universities and high schools. Kimmel has delivered the International Women’s Day annual lecture at the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Council of Europe, and has worked with the Ministers for Gender Equality of Norway, Denmark and Sweden in developing programs for boys and men. He consults widely with corporations, NGOs and public-sector organizations on gender equity issues.
