The Medieval Academy of America recently elected Sara Lipton, professor in the College of Arts and Sciences Department of History, as second Vice President in its 2022 governance election. This honor means Professor Lipton will become the 100th president of the Medieval Academy in 2024, and will deliver the Presidential Address at the Academy’s Centennial Meeting. Founded in 1925, The Medieval Academy of America is the largest organization in the U.S. promoting excellence in the field of medieval studies.

“This important post in the Medieval Academy of America only confirms what we already knew in the Department of History: Professor Sara Lipton’s stellar intellectual leadership across her entire field, and the long and sustained prestige of medieval studies at Stony Brook,” said Paul Gootenberg, distinguished professor and chair, Department of History.

Lipton received her PhD from Yale University. Her work focuses on religious identity and practice, Jewish-Christian relations, and art and culture in the high and later Middle Ages (11th–15th centuries). Lipton is particularly interested in how lived experience interacted with religious faith. Her current book project, “The Vulgate of Experience: Learning from Art in the High Middle Ages (1180–1300),” explores how medieval Christians looked at and learned from the frescoes, sculptures, stained glass, and other artworks that adorned their places of worship.

The Medieval Academy of America publishes the quarterly journal Speculum; awards prizes, grants, and fellowships; and supports research, publication, and teaching in medieval art, archaeology, history, law, literature, music, philosophy, religion, science, social and economic institutions, and all other aspects of the Middle Ages.
