Stony Brook University alumnus Jarvis M. Watson, who has served as Assistant Dean for Multicultural Affairs in the Division of Student Affairs, will now serve as Interim Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) and will serve on the University’s leadership team.

“I am confident that in this interim role Jarvis will provide the leadership needed to continue to advance our efforts to provide a welcoming campus for all,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD.
In his role as Assistant Dean for Multicultural Affairs, Dr. Watson has been active in advancing many initiatives outlined in the Stony Brook Plan for Equity, Inclusion and Diversity. He has been responsible for developing strategies to meet the needs of Stony Brook’s diverse student and professional populations, including the Diversity Leadership Development Initiative for historically underrepresented student affairs professionals. Dr. Watson developed and manages the day to day operations of the UNITI Cultural Center and its programs and works collaboratively with Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and various student organizations to promote education, interaction, and understanding across cultures. He has also been active in helping the Alumni Association to develop strong relationships with our diverse alumni population through strategic programmatic and volunteer efforts. As former Senior Counselor and Assistant Director with the Educational Opportunity Program, Dr. Watson has been successful in serving the needs of students in the areas of counseling, advising, training, supervising, retention, and program advocacy on the state and local government levels.
After earning his undergraduate degree in English from Stony Brook in 1998, Dr. Watson earned his Master’s in Counselor Education and an EdD in Educational Administration, Leadership, and Technology from Dowling College.
