Stony Brook Anthropology Professor Elizabeth Stone appeared on CNN International March 16 to discuss recent attacks on the cultural heritage of Iraq and Syria carried out by ISIS.
An expert on ancient Mesopotamia, Professor Stone has done extensive fieldwork in Iraq and has pioneered the use of high-resolution satellite imagery to assess damage to Iraq’s cultural heritage as a result of war, sanctions and occupation.
In the interview, Stone set recent events in the context of widespread looting of Middle Eastern archaeological sites that began with the US invasion and occupation of Iraq in 2003.
