Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Jules Feiffer, a faculty member in the MFA in Creative Writing and Literature program at Stony Brook Southampton, received a stellar review on the front page of Sunday’s New York Times Book Review for his first graphic novel, Kill My Mother.

“Jules Feiffer’s Kill My Mother is a tribute to film noir and detective fiction….But Kill My Mother isn’t mere pastiche. The story is a thoughtful meditation on female identity and whether the not-so-simple art of murder can ever be defended as a moral necessity. It is a story about stories, the myths we have to create in order to keep putting one foot in front of the other….I know what I think: Kill My Mother is terrific.”  — Laura Lippman, New York Times Book Review

“Bravo to long-time member of the Stony Brook Southampton faculty for another rave review of his first graphic novel,” commented Carla Caglioti,

executive director and assistant dean, Southampton Graduate Arts.

Feiffer’s Pulitzer-winning and internationally syndicated cartoon ran for 42 years in the Village Voice, but he has a wide range of creative work, including his Obie-winning play Little Murders, a screenplay for Carnal Knowledge and an Oscar-winning anti-military short subject animation Munro. Other works are the Tony nominee Knock Knock, and the Pulitzer nominee Grown-Ups, as well as his screenplays for Popeye and I Want to Go Home, best screenplay winner at the Venice Film Festival. Feiffer is also a children’s book author, with the award-winning books, Bark GeorgeI Lost My Bear and The Man in the Ceiling.

Professor Feiffer’s graduate seminar on the graphic novel will be offered at Stony Brook Southampton in Spring 2015.
