An assistant professor in the College of Arts and Sciences Department of Asian and Asian American Studies, Professor Sato teaches translation studies, language acquisition, and Japanese language and linguistics. She also serves as advisor for the Teacher Certification Program for Japanese, director of the Pre-College Japanese Program, and executive committee chair for the Japan Center. Professor Sato is an affiliated faculty member of the Center for Multilingual and Intercultural Communication and the Language Learning Resource Center. In addition to translanguaging and translation studies, her research interests also include language acquisition and online foreign language education.

“Dr. Sato’s research has the exciting potential to enrich the field of translation studies by positioning translation as both a venue and a vehicle for translanguaging, to bridge the gap between linguistic structural studies and context-bound language and communication studies, and to contribute to the burgeoning field of intercultural research in increasingly globalized (and digitized) societies,” said Agnes He, professor and chair of the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies. “I am thrilled that the AAUW has decided to support a highly motivated, talented, and resilient female colleague like Dr. Sato, who never gives up her career aspirations regardless of her circumstances and who always puts the interests of others before her own.

The AAUW Research Publication Grants are given to woman scholars whose work supports the vision of the AAUW: to break through educational and economic barriers so that all women have a fair chance. Founded in 1881, AAUW is the nation’s leading voice promoting equity and education for women and girls.

  • Congrats to Professor Eriko. This is a great opportunity to help improve our understanding of translation and translanguaging. I admire her vision to bridge the gap between linguistic structural studies and context-bound language and communication studies, and to contribute to the burgeoning field of intercultural research in increasingly globalized (and digitized) societies. I believe it will have a great impact on our understanding and respect for other cultures.
