The Godfrey Excellence in Teaching Awards, named for longtime CAS faculty member Bill Godfrey whose 52-year career at Stony Brook impacted the lives of so many students, were given to five faculty members across the College. These awards were created to give students an opportunity to honor faculty members who go above and beyond.

Each year, students in the College are invited to nominate faculty members who demonstrate excellence in teaching, a warm spirit and true mentorship for students in and outside the classroom. Members of the Dean’s Student Advisory Council deliberate to select the final recipients, one in each of five disciplines: Fine Arts, Humanities, Life Sciences, Social Sciences and Physical Sciences.

Out of 130 nominations, the 2019 honorees are:

  • Michele Bogart, Fine Arts: Professor, Department of Art
  • Eva Nagase, Humanities: Lecturer, Department of Asian and Asian American Studies
  • Maya Shelly, Life Sciences: Associate Professor, Department of Neurobiology and Behavior
  • Catherine Marrone, Social Sciences: Senior Lecturer, Department of Sociology
  • Michael Zingale, Physical Sciences: Associate Professor, Department of Physics and Astronomy

  • Jacqueline Donnelly, Assistant to the Chair, Department of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies
  • Jin Bentley, Lead Business and Grant Manager, Department of Physics and Astronomy
  • Mary Moran-Luba, Assistant to the Chair, Department of Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature and Hispanic Languages and Literature
