Charles Taber, Dean of the Graduate School and Vice Provost for Graduate Education, has received the 2017 Giving Back Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education. The Giving Back Award honors college and university administrators who go above and beyond their everyday leadership duties and give back to their campuses and communities.

Giving Back Award recipients were nominated by their colleagues and selected by INSIGHT Into Diversity based on their outstanding demonstration of social responsibility; involvement with students, faculty, staff and the community; and commitment to serving underrepresented populations. Taber is recognized for his passion, dedication and support for diversity and inclusion; he will be featured in the April 2017 Leadership Support and Giving Back issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.

Taber has demonstrated years of outstanding and unwavering commitment to the recruitment, retention and support of underrepresented students enrolled in Stony Brook’s graduate programs. He plays a critical role in providing valuable guidance to the Center for Inclusive Education, which supports underrepresented students in their pursuit of graduate degrees and postdoctoral training. He revamped the nomination procedures for the Dr. W. Burghardt Turner Fellowship Program to ease the recruitment process and increase the number of nominations made and awarded. Taber was an immediate and impactful advocate for Stony Brook’s ADVANCE (Increasing the Participation and Advancement of Women in Academic Science and Engineering Careers) initiative, a National Science Foundation grant. He has been a staunch advocate for policies and funding to support undocumented students. He also supports the Northeast LGBTQ* College Conference and created the Building Communities Initiative to foster increased networking and knowledge sharing among graduate students across disciplines.

“The Giving Back Award is being awarded to leaders of institutions of higher education who exemplify what it truly means to ‘give back’ to others,” said Holly Mendelson, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. “These administrators are role models, and we honor their efforts to promote diversity and inclusion on their campuses and in their communities.”
