The Blue Ocean Institute, established in 2003 by conservation pioneer Carl Safina, has changed its name to The Safina Center at Stony Brook University.
The name change is prompted in part by Stony Brook University’s recent establishment of the Carl Safina Endowed Research Professorship for Nature and Humanity. Blue Ocean Institute’s founder, Carl Safina, is the inaugural holder of that professorship. Additionally, the Institute is expanding its focus beyond marine environments, to certain other conservation topics that are not strictly ocean-oriented.
About The Safina Center
Author and scientist Carl Safina founded The Safina Center (formerly Blue Ocean Institute) in 2003. Located at Stony Brook University on Long Island, New York, The Safina Center witnesses, explains and seeks to improve the changing relationship between humanity and wild nature. The Center’s mission: inspire increasing numbers of people to actively engage as constituents for conservation.
The Safina Center is based in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University and is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. It is also affiliated with the University’s Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science.
