This year’s Stars of Stony Brook Gala honors Stony Brook University faculty member Patricia Wright on Wednesday, April 16, at Pier Sixty in New York City. In addition to raising money to support student scholarship programs, the 2014 Gala will benefit the University’s work in Madagascar.
A winner of the prestigious MacArthur Foundation Genius Award, Professor Wright is the founder of Centre ValBio, a modern research campus in the rainforest of Madagascar. For almost three decades, Wright has combined her research on lemurs with efforts to preserve the country’s endangered rainforests. (Urban Gardner: For the Love of Lemurs, Wall Street Journal) In addition, Centre ValBio partners with surrounding communities through its outreach programs to help the Malagasy people.
With the recent establishment of Stony Brook’s Global Health Institute, the University is more invested in Madagascar than ever. The Institute, made possible by a generous gift from Jim and Robin Herrnstein, will collaborate with Centre ValBio to drive cutting-edge health research and programming in the region.
Faculty and staff Gala tickets are available at a reduced price of $500 per person or $5,000 for a table of 10. Chartered coach transportation to and from the Gala is also being offered. Buses will depart from campus and return immediately afterward. Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations are required.
