Stony Brook University has been selected as one of 24 colleges and universities receiving grants through the Inclusive Excellence initiative of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
Schools were selected from 511 pre-proposals submitted in 2015 through multiple rounds of peer review. Each award is for a total of $1 million to be paid over the five years of the grant.
The objectives of the HHMI Inclusive Excellence initiative are: (i) to encourage colleges and universities to increase their capacity for inclusion of all students, especially those students who are from underrepresented groups and/or who come to college via “non-traditional” pathways; and (ii) to disseminate to the larger higher education community what is learned about increasing capacity for inclusion by each of the grantee institutions.
HHMI aims to create a learning community of the 24 institutions in which the representatives from each school will share with one another their progress in achieving the goals of their project. Representatives from each school will meet in early August for a kick-off at which they will be introduced to one another, to HHMI staff, and to the Inclusive Excellence Commission of the AAC&U, which will be providing an ongoing evaluation of the initiative.
