Stony Brook University earned three Best of LI 2012 designations by readers of the Long Island Press in the newspaper’s seventh annual Best of LI competition. Winners in the Education category were announced in the January 12 issue.
With more than 1.2 million total votes cast in the competition, Long Island Press readers have selected Stony Brook University as the Best Long Island College or University; Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, as the Best College President; and the Athletic Department for the Best College Sports Program. Wolfie, the Seawolves mascot, came in second in the Best Mascot category moving up one spot from last year’s third place finish.
“We are grateful to the readers of the Long Island Press for recognizing Stony Brook University as a place of excellence and one of Long Island’s greatest resources,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. “This past year was an extraordinary one in the young history of our institution,” he said, referring to numerous fellowships; awards; advancements in science, technology, and engineering; a banner year in athletics; and two milestone moments, the historic Simons Gift and the approval of the NY SUNY2020 legislation. “Stony Brook University is positioned to become one of the nation’s top-tier universities.”
In addition to the winners published in the January 12 commemorative issue, the remaining winners will be announced in the January 19 issue followed by the “Best of the Best” issue on January 26 featuring the top 20 overall vote getters.
