The Department of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Arts and Sciences was once again entered into The 5+ Club, the highest award available for teacher preparation from the Physics Teacher Education Coalition (PhysTEC), a joint project of the American Physical Society (APS) and the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). This impressive recognition is due to the Department’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program that graduated five or more qualified physics teachers during the 2020-2021 academic year, one of only nine institutions recognized in the nation. The Department has received this recognition in six out of the past seven years. This puts Stony Brook in approximately the top five universities in the country in the training of physics teachers.
“I am delighted that Stony Brook is once again recognized for our small but meaningful contribution to secondary school physics education, which is critically needed in an increasingly science and technology driven society,” said Chang Kee Jung, distinguished professor and chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy. “The recent success of our MAT program is a result of passionate and dedicated collaborative work between Professor Robert McCarthy in our Department and faculty members in the I-STEM Institute.”
The Science Teacher Preparation Program at Stony Brook University is committed to excellence in science teaching and learning, offering a palette of coursework, clinical practice, seminars and special projects that prepares students to assume teaching positions in grades 7-12. The program includes three options that lead to New York State teacher certification: undergraduate, graduate, and combined undergraduate and graduate degrees.
