Last weekend Stony Brook took home the ESCHL title, but it wasn’t without going through two formidable opponents. Saturday night the Seawolves took on the University of Rhode Island Rams, and defeated them 4-2 to advance to championship Sunday.
Stony Brook then faced Delaware in the championship game. The teams skated to a 0-0 tie at the end of 20 minutes with both teams playing hard. The second period brought a pair of goals for the Seawolves from Wes Hawkins and Matt Gervasi. Delaware would fight back with a late power play goal. The third period started with the Seawolves leading by a goal, but Wes Hawkins would put away his second goal from a great pass from Sam Brewster. The Seawolves continued to struggle on the penalty kill as Delaware was able to put a second goal past Brendan Jones. The Seawolves would hold on to win the Championship 3-2 as the final attempts from Delaware were denied. Wes Hawkins was named tournament MVP.
The Seawolves are looking to continue their winning ways when they head to Chicago, Illinois for the ACHA National Tournament. This will be the Seawolves 13th ACHA National Tournament appearance in the last 14 years. Their first opponent will be the University of Rhode Island on Friday March 1st at 6:30 pm. All games will be played live on fasthockey.com.
