Spring ‘Writers Speak Wednesdays’ Series Begins February 8

Every semester the MFA in Creative Writing and Literature program hosts Writers Speak Wednesdays, featuring a variety of guest authors. The reception starts at 6:30 pm, with readings at 7 pm in the Radio Lounge on the second floor of Chancellors Hall at Stony Brook Southampton.

February 8: Helen Simonson
Helen Simonson is a Southampton MFA alum and New York Times bestselling novelist. Her titles include Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand and The Summer Before the War.

February 22: Jamal Joseph
Jamal Joseph is a Columbia University graduate film program professor and author of Panther Baby, based on his Black Panther Party youth, and Tupac: Legacy, an interactive biography of Tupac Shakur.

March 1: Omar Bah in conversation with Harriet Levin Millan
Omar Bah, the founder of the Refugee Dream Center, is a torture survivor and former refugee from The Gambia in West Africa. He is the author of Africa’s Hell on Earth: The Ordeal of an African Journalist. Harriet Levin Millan reunited Sudanese lost boys and girls with their mothers living abroad. A poet and novelist, she is the author of How Fast Can You Run, and is a professor of creative writing at Drexel University.

March 8: Faculty Reading
Star Black, Kaylie Jones, Susan Scarf Merrell, Julie Sheehan, Terese Svoboda and Lou Ann Walker are among the faculty who will read from their works.

March 22: Tim Murphy
The editor of POZ Magazine and staff writer for New York Magazine, Tim Murphy is an HIV/AIDS reporter and novelist whose works include Getting Off Clean and The Breeders Box.

March 29: Stacey Waite in conversation with Charif Shanahan
Stacey Waite is a poet and University of Nebraska professor whose forthcoming book is Teaching Queer: Radical Possibilities for Writing and Knowing. Shanahan is the winner of the Crab Orchard Series in Poetry First Book Award and author of Into Each Room We Enter Without Knowing.

April 12: Judith Miller
The Pulitzer Prize-winning former New York Times reporter is the author of The Story: A Reporter’s Journey, about the growing threats to quality journalism.

April 19: Julie Shigekuni
A creative writing professor at the University of New Mexico, Julie Shigekuni is the author of In Plain View and is the recipient of the PEN Oakland Josephine Miles Award for Excellence in Literature and the American Japanese Literary Award.

May 3: MFA Reading
Those who write, share — readings from MFA students.
