Emerson String Quartet violinist Philip Setzer and pianist Gilbert Kalish will perform in concert on Friday, February 1, at 8 pm in Staller Center‘s Recital Hall. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Gilbert Kalish Endowed Scholarship Fund, which supports Stony Brook music students. Setzer and Kalish, who are on the faculty at Stony Brook University, have 10 Grammy Awards and 20 Grammy nominations between them.
Kalish said the Department of Music attracts and nurtures a remarkable group of young artists who come from all over the world to study at Stony Brook. “The importance of supporting them cannot be overstated,” he said. “Without proper financial support we will not be able to compete with our sister schools such as Yale, Juilliard, Indiana, USC and New England Conservatory, which offer huge scholarship incentives to attract these elite students.”
Setzer added, “Gil has been a great leader of the Music Department at Stony Brook for decades. His commitment to music, to his students and to the school as a whole has been an inspiration to us all. This scholarship pays tribute to him but also to the many students who will benefit from the assistance it will provide. The Gilbert Kalish Fund will enable more and more performers and teachers to go out into the world and pass on Gil’s great artistry and tremendous knowledge to future generations.”
The duo will perform Ravel, Sonata for Violin and Piano; Ives, Largo; Beethoven, Sonata in C minor for Violin and Piano; and the world premiere of Lan-in (Winnie) Yang’s Sonata for Violin and Piano.

“With a sly nod toward such masters as Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev and Poulenc, though with an assured individual voice, Winnie Yang composes accessible music that is sparkling, witty, good-natured, emotive and often deeply beautiful,” said Perry Goldstein, chair of the Department of Music.
