Your Career Matters: Resume Writing Revisited

Stony Brook University; Career Center Staff PortraitsIf you’re applying for jobs that you qualify for, and are not getting the interview – your resume could be the problem. Your resume isn’t the only thing that will land you a job; however, there are ways to write your resume that will get you noticed for the right reasons. Resume advice will vary from person to person, which leaves many people confused about what’s needed (or not needed) on a resume. There is no right or wrong way of writing a resume. Writing an effective resume requires a person to showcase skills and accomplishments based on the needs of the employer.
Here are three tips to help your resume go from good to GREAT:
  1. There’s no need to include all of your past experiences; your resume should only include experiences and/or skills that are relevant to the position you are applying for.
  2. Take time to develop bullets that move beyond your job description, show measurable results and speak to the skills the employer is looking for.
  3. Use keywords and industry buzz words that will show your depth of knowledge and make your resume easily searchable in a database.
