Your Career Matters: Navigate Transition Successfully

Stony Brook University; Career Center Staff PortraitsThe transition from student to professional can present unique challenges. College has expectations and norms that are very different from the workplace. The first year in a new job requires adjustment to expectations, attitudes and behaviors.
Here are some tips cited by Ed Holton in his article, Managing the Transition to Work: Twelve Essential Steps to a Fast Start to Your Career, to help you out:
  1. Identify success-related attitudes. Look around and find those people in the organization who seem successful and respected by others. Model your attitude after theirs.
  2. Adjust your expectations. Frustration is nothing more than the difference between expectations and reality.
  3. Understand your organization’s culture. You aren’t allowed to deviate from the culture until you are accepted as part of the “team” and have a track record of proven performance.

Register and participate in the “Transitioning from College to Career” workshop at the Wang Center (Alumni Brook Room) on Saturday, August 16, 2014 from 10:00am – 11:30am. Feel free to view other Alumni Career Services ‘Archived Webinars‘ or visit our website.
