Stony Brook University; Career Center Staff PortraitsThe average person makes about 70 decisions a day, according to Columbia University Professor Sheena Iyengar. She asks compelling questions: Is the desire for choice innate or created by culture? How much control do we really have over what we choose?

Too much choice can overwhelm us, especially as it relates to career options. Making career choices can stir up mixed thoughts and emotions, which may make it hard for us to see multiple perspectives, have confidence, and develop plans of action. If our choices define us and shape our lives, it’s important to feel a greater sense of control throughout the process.

Here are a few tips to help provide a balanced approach to making career choices:

  1. Engage in a critical thinking process to expand your view: What factual information do you have? What role is emotion playing? Are you thinking outside the box? Click here to explore the Six Thinking Hats System, developed by Edward de Bono.
  2. Connect with people you know and trust to strengthen your plan of action, gain insight and garner support.
  3. Explore through experiences and solidify your interests. Volunteer time to an organization on your target company list.
