Stony Brook University’s Offices of Alumni Relations and University Advancement hosted an Underrepresented Minorities in Medicine (URM) event to bring together URM alumni, faculty, medical students and undergraduate students.
The event was aimed at building a pipeline to connect URM students with alumni and foster opportunities for mentoring, career development, and real-world clinical and research experiences. The long-term goal is to address the critical need for diversity within the medical field.
Students and alumni had dinner and engaged in an informal Q&A, followed by further socializing at a show in the Staller Center for the Arts.
Brief opening remarks were made by Aldustus E. Jordan, EdD, Associate Dean, School of Medicine; Mary Hoffmann, Assistant Director, Alumni Relations, and Duante Stanton, Development Officer, Health Sciences. The alumni in attendance were Alban Bailey, MD ’07; Richard Efem, MD ’16; Gloria Escamilla, MD ’91; Juan Espinoza, MD ’99; Patricia Matos-Puente, MD ’84; Cleadous Murphy, MD ’99; Jorge Puente, MD ’82 and Sheryl White-Scott, MD ’84.
