Many colleges and universities invite alumni back to campus to speak to classes. At Stony Brook, alumni come to stay for the day for a more personal interaction with students through the new Alumni in Residence program created by the Stony Brook Alumni Association. The program was launched on Wednesday, September 27, in collaboration with Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS), when SBAA board member Jaime Moore ’88 moderated an intimate discussion with students on how identity factors into their educational and professional aspirations.

“It was such a pleasure to host Jaime for the launch of the Alumnus in Residency program.  We’re very proud of the community we’ve established through LACS and having him here to interact with our students was such an inspiring and unique opportunity for all of us,” said Professor Eric Zolov, Director of LACS.

Jaime seamlessly wove his personal experiences with culture into his discussion on professional success.

“For me, I was always good at numbers but what has mattered even more in terms of my success has been my ability to understand where another person is coming from,” said Jaime, explaining that “the key to success is the ability to understand another person’s culture.”

Immediately following this conversation, Jaime made himself available to students for individual mentoring sessions.

“It was great for me to speak openly with someone like Mr. Moore, who was so generous with his time, and who had a deep understanding of where we as students, immigrants, and people of color are coming from,” said student Rodman Serrano, following his mentoring session.

In addition to his role on the Alumni Association board, and being a proud donor to Stony Brook, Jaime is the Founder and President of El Fogón Center for the Arts, Founding Member of the Bronx Arts Alliance, and Director at Citigroup Global Markets.
