Senior Class Legacy Blog: Dorrien Van Dyke ’17

Stony Brook University, and especially the Department of Athletics, has had a major impact on my life. Throughout my four years, I’ve grown in more ways than one and I’m confident that I am prepared and eager for success after I graduate.

For instance, the Office of Life Skills — the center for academic advising for student athletes and one of my favorite additions to Athletics throughout my time here — sets up mock interviews, networking events, business etiquette dinners and more for student athletes. Without them, I wouldn’t have had the real-life experiences that have helped me prepare and be confident for life after collegiate sports.

None of this would have been possible without those alumni who have given back before me. Their example has inspired me to give back to Seawolves United — the main fundraising program for Stony Brook Athletics — because their mission is to positively transform the life of student athletes. I can speak from experience that without them, I wouldn’t have had the privilege to take advantage of so many opportunities. Through alumni giving and the incredible Athletics team at Stony Brook, my experience here has been everything I could have ever hoped for.
