The Stony Brook men’s basketball team was selected to finish fourth in the America East, as announced by the league office Wednesday morning. It was a tie for fourth in the conference with in-state rival UAlbany, as Vermont, Hartford and UMBC were selected in that order ahead of the Seawolves. Redshirt junior Akwasi Yeboah (Chigwell, England) was named to the America East Preseason All-Conference Team.
Stony Brook finished fifth in the league last year, but was able to advance to the playoff semifinals for the ninth straight season after topping UAlbany on the road in the opening round. Yeboah returns after leading Stony Brook in scoring and rebounding as an All-Conference Second Team selection. The 2018 America East Rookie of the Year, Elijah Olaniyi (Newark, N.J.) is also back for the Seawolves after playing in all 32 games and averaging 7.8 points and 3.8 rebounds. Jaron Cornish (Abaco, Bahamas) is the lone senior on the roster, he led the team in assists and finished second in scoring in his first season with the Seawolves last year.
Despite being a young team, Stony Brook returns three of its top four scorers from a season ago, losing just one starter from the lineup used by season’s end. The team welcomes seven newcomers, including five freshmen, JUCO transfer Jeff Otchere (Bronx, N.Y.) and Chattanooga transfer Makale Foreman (Kingsport, Tenn.), who will have to sit out this season due to NCAA transfer rules.
