Katherine’s Message of Thanks

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my donor for helping to make this scholarship possible. You have no idea how much you are helping out my family and I with this monetary award, and I don’t think I can express how much we appreciate your generosity. I am so excited to meet you and thank you in person for this award. You are making such a big difference in my life and my education. When I graduate and start working as a nurse, I plan to give back to a future nursing student just as you have done for me, because I want to be able to make a difference in someone else’s life. You are such an inspiration, and I hope to make every single day. Thank you so much.

Katherine’s Career Interests/Approach to Career

I am interested in pursuing a career in nursing. I want to be a nurse because it is the one career in the healthcare field that will allow me to be a patient advocate. I will be able to change people’s lives for the better and play a major role in the healthcare team.
Katherine’s Inspiration and Proudest Accomplishment
An inspirational professor I’ve had at Stony Brook University is Professor Frederick Grine for Human Anatomy (ANP 300). He truly changed my entire life and perspective on my college education, and it is because of him that I was able to turn my grades around and be the best student possible. He taught me more than just anatomy; he taught me how to manage my time effectively and what it means to truly know a subject and immerse yourself in it. He also taught me how to be a strong leader and role model for other students.
I am most proud of my ability to help people who are in dire need of it. Specifically, my clinical experiences have allowed me to be there for patients who have serious illnesses and feel as if all hope is lost. At the end of the day, I am a ray of hope for these people and am the one person who will never leave their side. Clinical care is a constant reminder that I have chosen such a wonderful profession, and I cannot wait to graduate and make my dreams come to life.
The Scholarship’s Impact on Katherine
We asked Katherine: Did your coming to Stony Brook depend upon scholarship support? Yes, it did. The reason I chose Stony Brook was because I received a scholarship. Being one of five children makes college extremely stressful on my family financially, so any scholarship is a huge help to me.
We asked Katherine: Do you have a family member or members who made significant sacrifices to help you come to Stony Brook? Yes – My mom has made huge sacrifices to help me come to Stony Brook, and I am so grateful that I have the opportunity to attend this university. She wants me to have the best education possible, so she will do anything that she must to help me finish my schooling here. Receiving this scholarship has made life much easier on my family, and we are all so appreciative of this award. Words cannot describe how grateful we are for it.
This scholarship really has had a huge impact on my education, and I really cannot put into words how appreciative I am of it. I work two jobs right now, but this scholarship will enable me to take a few more days off from work so that I can study more for my classes. It honestly means so much to be able to use this money towards my education and have more time to put into my studies.
