John Brisson Jr. ’76 — three-time US Rowing Nationals gold medalist and Stony Brook Athletics Hall of Famer — came back to the Brook on Wednesday, October 26, to speak to current members of the SBU Crew team.

Brisson started rowing in 1973 as a student at Stony Brook. He captained the squad that took home the
Metropolitan Championship in 1975 and 1976, and led the team to more wins than any other stroke in the program’s 19-year history.

After graduation, Brisson distinguished himself in sweep and sculling boats from the ’80 Olympic trials through the ’84 and ’88 Olympic trials.

A former coach for the NCAA Women’s Division I collegiate program at Fairfield University, Brisson is currently the rowing director and head youth coach at the Pelham Community Rowing Association in New Rochelle, New York.

“I was privileged to enter a room filled with eager, receptive and focused SBU rowers,” he said of his experience. “I left feeling remarkably positive about giving back to the institution whose impact I too often take for granted.”
