Stony Brook alum José Manuel Fernández de Labastida y del Olmo (Ph.D. 1985) has been named General Director for the National Research and Management Plan at the Spanish Ministry for Science and Innovation. Previously, he was Deputy Director of the Scientific and Technological Research of Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas and Deputy Director of Research Projects at the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Fernández is a theoretical physicist and pursued postdoctoral work at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and was then a fellow at CERN.
He was in charge of the Grupo Especializado de Física Teórica de la Real Sociedad Española de Física (1998-2001) and a member of Consejo de la Sociedad Europa de Física (2000-2004).
