President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, will represent Stony Brook University at the United Nations 2018 HeForShe IMPACT Summit, taking place in New York City September 26.

President Stanley will join other university presidents and public-sector leaders to share ground-breaking practices and concrete solutions towards the achievement of gender equality. The Summit will also unveil the HeForShe 2018 Emerging Solutions Report, featuring close to 100 emerging solutions for gender equality — and will ignite momentum for the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Other Summit participants include senior UN officials, international media, UN Global Goodwill Ambassadors, celebrity guests and youth activists.
Appearing on a panel on accelerating women’s economic empowerment, to be moderated by award-winning actress Anne Hathaway, President Stanley will describe how Stony Brook is addressing gender equality and social mobility for young adults.
Created by UN Women — the United Nations entity for gender equality and the empowerment of women — HeForShe began in September 2014 as a global effort to engage men and boys in support of gender equality. In January 2015, HeForShe’s IMPACT 10x10x10 program launched, which convenes 10 heads of state, 10 global CEOs and 10 university presidents to fast-track gender equality in boardrooms, classrooms and world capitals. Stony Brook University is one of the 10 universities globally — and one of only two in the US — to join this important initiative.
The event will be viewable live online.
