2003 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient

Nilsa S. Gutierrez graduated from Stony Brook’s School of Medicine in 1980. Establishing herself early in her career as a socially conscious practitioner, Nilsa S. Gutierrez started practicing in community health centers in the Lower East Side and Central Harlem. She was soon recruited as a consultant to the AIDS Institute, where she was promoted to associate medical director in 1990. In 1994, Nilsa Gutierrez became the Institute’s medical director.

After resigning from the Institute in 1995 in protest of state budget cuts, Dr. Gutierrez moved onto her next position. She served as medical consultant to the Community Family Planning Council through 1997.

Dr. Gutierrez has received various awards over the years for her work. She was given the Exceptional Service Award by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Service, Region II, the Outstanding Women Leaders in Health Care Award from the Association of Hispanic health Care Executives, along with other honors.

Currently, she is the medical director of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Region II.
