It is a great honor to assume the role of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine Alumni Association President, and I want to personally thank Dr. Anthony Girardi for his leadership over the past several years.

Stony Brook has always been a center of innovation and growth. And the legacy continues. A look around campus tells an exciting story as new buildings arise from the ground to house the most advanced technology, while providing high-touch care to our patients. It is history in the making — a time to take great pride in our alma mater and to reconnect with the school.

The focus of the Alumni Association this year will be just that – we want to reach out and engage our alumni in ways that we have never done before. Take a look at a virtual tour of the new MART building here: It is truly a walk through the future and ought to inspire you to make a special trip to see everything that has happened since the last time you were here. Even those who live locally will find news around every corner.

The Alumni Association has established several traditions. Each year we award $10,000 to a fourth-year student who has demonstrated significant leadership and contributed to the field of medicine, scientific knowledge, the community and the School of Medicine. I have had the privilege of reviewing these applications, and our students have been truly remarkable in their accomplishments, all while achieving academic excellence.

We have also made steady progress in supporting annual reunions, where classes have rekindled old friendships and continuously raised the bar to fund scholarships for the School of Medicine.

Finally, our Distinguished Alumni Award and Outstanding Recent Graduate Award are bestowed each year at the School’s annual White Coat Ceremony. Our awardees inspire us all, but their stories are even more meaningful when told to incoming students.

This year, we are making a special effort to set up a HOST program for our students who may be traveling out of town for interviews or other reasons. Please check our website if you are interested in hosting a student. The commitment can be large or small. Just spending a few minutes on the phone can help students in planning their travel.

All of this would not be possible without the dedication and commitment of our fellow alumni and board members and the support of the staff of the alumni office. We welcome your participation on our board or events at any level and we would love to hear from you. Join us in creating a connected community of alumni.
