It’s been an exciting and active year for the Stony Brook School of Medicine Alumni Association!

This summer we presented the Distinguished Alumni Award to Gregory P. Conners, MD ’89 and the Outstanding Recent graduate award to Tara L. Huston, MD ’01  during the annual White Coat Ceremony held in August.

Also at the White Coat Ceremony, I had the privilege to present the second annual Stony Brook School of Medicine Alumni Association Award of $10,000 to Muath Bishawi ’08, ’10. This award is funded by alumni contributions to the School of Medicine Scholarship Endowment Fund. Your continued support to the SOM Alumni Scholarship Endowment Fund is appreciated.

Dr. Joan Faro, MD, ’82, moderated the Alumni Association sponsored Affordable Care Act Symposium at Stony Brook Manhattan.  The panel included representatives of the insurance, legal, physician and health care policy fields. Their presentations and subsequent discussion with members of audience was very insightful and thought provoking.

Through your generous financial support your Alumni Association was able to support four students for their International Medical Missions this past summer. A special thanks to Dr. Debra Messina, MD, ’88, for her efforts in this endeavor.

I can proudly report that we had more than 70 students attend our Careers in Medicine night which took place in October. In addition to the students, we had the following alumni and School of Medicine faculty attend: Rachel Boykin MD ’02, Joan Faro MD ’82, Douglas Katz MD ’90, Lloyd Lense MD, Victor Levy MD ’81, Ronnie Salzman MD ’80, Demetrius Moutsiakis MD ’97, William Schweizer MD ’83, Sherry Sussman MD ’95 and Lisa Vignogna-Barlas MD ’96. Our next Career in Medicine is scheduled for February 27, 2014. Please join us if you can, the students and your fellow alumni will be excited to see you. Please contact Mary Hoffmann at Mary.Hoffmann@stonybrook.edu for further details.

The class of ’83 had their reunion on the weekend of October 19. Nearly three-quarters of the class returned from as far away as California, Florida, Connecticut and Washington.  It was by all accounts a resounding success and enjoyed by all! View pictures from the reunion here.

The School of Medicine Alumni Association also hosted a reception on November 3, 2013 in Philadelphia at the AAMC conference.  If you’re attending a national conference and would like the alumni association to help you sponsor a reception for Stony Brook alumni, please give our advancement office a call.

Also, the Stony Brook School of Medicine Alumni Association is proud to congratulate our dean, Dr. Kenneth Kaushansky, on his National Honor for Seminal Research in Hematology.

In closing, let me thank our Alumni for their past and future support, and wish you all happy, healthy holidays.

Anthony Girardi, MD’80, FACS
President
