At Stony Brook Medicine, together we go far beyond.

That’s the theme of Stony Brook University’s historic seven-year $600 million capital campaign, which launched publicly on Nov. 21, following a silent phase from 2011 to 2015.

As a truly historic event, this campaign is rightfully the focus of this edition of Medicine Today. Simply put, it’s big news. It will have a truly transformative impact on Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Medicine.

Currently we stand just $174 million away from reaching our ambitious goal. And Stony Brook Medicine’s share of that amount is $100 million.

Many of our exemplary medical programs will benefit, starting with our Stony Brook University Cancer Center ($25 million), research ($24 million), the Neurosciences Institute ($20 million), Stony Brook Children’s Hospital ($10 million) and the Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine ($8 million). Other recipients will include the Heart Institute ($5 million), School of Nursing ($4 million), School of Health Technology and Management ($2.5 million) and School of Social Welfare ($1 million).

Also included in this edition of Medicine Today is a story about the Knapp Swezey Foundation’s $5 million challenge grant to benefit Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. We have until June of next year to raise $2.5 million in order to earn the foundation’s matching dollars.

A recent topping-out ceremony for the Children’s Hospital signaled a significant milestone in the completion of our new facility, slated for occupancy in 2017.

You’ll also learn more about transformative change occurring on the East End of Long Island with our planned affiliation with Eastern Long Island Hospital. And speaking of change, our websites for Stony Brook Medicine and the School of Medicine have been transformed as well, with new mobile-friendly features and functionality.

So how do we achieve our lofty ambitions? Only with your help. Your support will enable us to achieve transformative results for the institution and for our patients. Together, we will go far beyond.
