In the company of alumni, family and friends, Lily D. McNair MA ’83, PhD ’87 was awarded the 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award in an intimate ceremony on May 18. Among those in attendance were McNair’s former professor and mentor, Distinguished Professor of Psychology, Dr. Marvin Goldfried as well as her husband and fellow alumnus, Dr. George Roberts ’84. This award comes on the heels of Dr. McNair’s inauguration as the president of Tuskegee University, where she became the first female to hold this role in the institution’s 137-year history.
“The strength behind every great University can be attributed in many ways to its alumni — people like Lily who go on to do great work in the world and live a life characterized by our University’s mission,” said Alumni Association President, Bedel Saget ’88.
Established in 1983, the Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes and pays tribute to outstanding Stony Brook University alumni whose exceptional achievements and careers reflect the highest values embraced and promoted by both Stony Brook University and the Stony Brook University Alumni Association.
“Dr. Lily McNair’s research and outstanding career accomplishments epitomize Stony Brook University’s mission in the areas of Diversity, upward mobility and momentum, and our focus on fostering ambitious ideas,” said Provost Michael Bernstein.
Congratulations, Dr. McNair!
