To say Charles and Maria Ryan are ‘involved’ in Stony Brook University and the Medical Center community is an understatement. For more than a decade after leaving Stony Brook as students, the husband-wife team has worked together and individually to demonstrate and reflect the University’s core value of excellence.
Maria has contributed her time and talents as a teacher, practitioner, and researcher at the School of Dental Medicine. She’s currently a professor in the Department of Oral Biology and Pathology, the director of clinical research at the School of Dental Medicine and a member of the medical staff at the Hospital. Maria is also active on several scientific, dental and medical advisory boards- both on and off campus. What’s more, during the past year, Maria served as the President of Stony Brook’s Alumni Association Board.
Husband and fellow alum Charles is an adjunct professor at Stony Brook University and Chief Intellectual Property Counsel for Forest Laboratories. Despite his demanding work schedule, Charles served on the Medical Center’s Leadership Council and is now Chair of the Medical Center’s Development Council, which was recently formed to further its vision of becoming a world class institution through philanthropy and community support.
Not only have Charles and Maria donated their time, talents and resources directly to the University, they’ve also enhanced the profile of Stony Brook University by way of their respective career accomplishments.
Maria is a national and internationally known speaker and author and has published over 75 original scholarly works. Her research is funded by the national institutes of health, private foundations and industrial sources and she holds several U.S. patents based on her work at the University.
