Douglas S. Katz, MD ’90

2012 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient

Esteemed clinician, beloved educator, prolific author and editor, and innovative research leader, Dr. Douglas Katz embodies the best of all that a Stony Brook University School of Medicine education has to offer. For the past 13 years, Dr. Katz has been the Director of Body Imaging and Vice Chair for Clinical Research and Education at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, New York. Five times he has been named Attending of the Year – three times in radiology, most recently in 2010, and twice in internal medicine.

Passionate in the pursuit and the sharing of knowledge, Dr. Katz also has served as Professor of Clinical Radiology at Stony Brook University School of Medicine for more than a decade and is heavily involved in radiology and general resident/medical education at his institution. He has lectured widely, with 110 regional and national lectures on a variety of imaging-related topics. Dr. Katz also has been in high demand as an author and editor. He has co-authored 597 publications and abstracts, as well as two books. Named the Radiological Society of North America’s (RSNA) Editorial Fellow in 1999, Dr. Katz over the years has served in various editorial capacities for both the American Journal of Roentgenology (AJR) and Radiology. He has been a distinguished reviewer and a top reviewer in volume for the AJR for the past several years.

Dr. Katz is heavily involved in multiple local, regional, national and international radiology organizations, where he has held several leadership roles, in particular in the Radiological Society of North America, the American Roentgen Ray Society and the American Society of Emergency Radiology. He is Past President of the Long Island Radiological Society. Among other recognitions accumulated by Dr. Katz were co-winning the “Diagnosis Please” contest at Radiology, and receiving the case-of-the-day Summa Cum Laude award at the 2008 and 2009 annual meetings of the American Society of Emergency Radiology.

His most recent awards highlight a lesser-known talent – Dr. Katz is the recipient of several medals for regional winemaking in the state of New Jersey using California grapes.
