Congratulations to the first recipients of the Stony Brook School of Medicine Drs. Philip V. and Richard P. Messina Endowed Fund for Global Excellence, second year medical students Yuly Arias and Steven Matthews. The endowment was established by Linda Messina Collier, Joanna Messina O’Connell, Donald O’Connell, George N. Coritsidis, MD and Debra Messina, MD.

The Endowed Fund for Global Excellence, which is awarded annually to a Stony Brook School of Medicine medical student and a Stony Brook Medicine ophthalmology resident, is meant to help offset the costs so that recipients can engage in a cataract surgical and medicial mission with A Promise to Peru, Inc. It is a fitting way to remember the lives of Drs. Philip V. and Richard P. Messina. Their legacy of service to those in need and their passion for medicine will live on and serve to provide an example to young physicians in training, now and for future generations.

If you’d like to help support global health, and clinical and research student electives, please donate to the SOM Alumni International Medicine Award Fund. Interested students can contact Mary Hoffmann for information regarding sponsorship from the Alumni Board.
