Breena R. Taira, MD ’05 MPH, CPH

2011 Outstanding Recent Graduate Award Recipient

Dr. Taira received both her MD and MPH degrees from Stony Brook University. After beginning her postgraduate training in general surgery, she then completed an Empire Clinical Research Investigator Program (ECRIP) Fellowship in burn and wound healing.

She is currently an Emergency Medicine resident and an affiliate faculty member of the Graduate Program in Public Health at Stony Brook University. She has over thirty peer-reviewed publications in Burn, Trauma and Public Health and has given research presentations at numerous national and international meetings. She has worked with the WHO and other organizations on efforts to assess the availability of emergency care and surgical services in the developing world. Her current academic interests include the pathophysiology of burn wound progression, socioeconomic determinants of injury risk, assessment of burn prevention initiatives, and injury epidemiology and emergency care availability in developing countries.
