Making educated career decisions can be difficult at any stage of career development. Alumni Career Services’s Alumni Sharing Knowledge (ASK) blog is intended for Stony Brook University students and alumni to learn career knowledge, and get advice from experienced alumni working in various career fields.
Throughout the year, four alumni bloggers from various career backgrounds will be sharing the lessons they’ve learned from their professional experiences:
Alp Akdeniz ’16: BS, Business Management
Alp Akdeniz has a wide array of experience having worked in commercial and start-up roles. His interests includes finance, analytics, and business intelligence. Alp earned his Bachelors of Science in Business Management with a concentration in Finance from Stony Brook in May 2016. Currently, he is a finance and accounting rotational analyst at CA Technologies, a technology company that specializes in producing system software for a variety of clients, a majority of which are Fortune Global 500 companies.
Joan Dickinson ’12: MA, Liberal Studies
Joan Dickinson is a marketing professional with more than 20 years experience in market research, planning, creative content, event management and social media. She currently serves as the community relations director at Stony Brook University. Her strength is in strategic planning, brand management, relationships and team building. Joan teaches courses on communications and working in teams at Stony Brook. She is a published author and an award-winning essayist. Joan holds a BA from Queens College in Communications and an MA from Stony Brook University in Liberal Studies. She is an avid sports fan, and is fluent in NFL, MLS, and MLB. Her upcoming seminar, Football 101 for the New NFL Fan, will be held in January.
John Leddy ’76: MAL, Center for Continuing Education
John Leddy is the director emeritus for the athletic bands at Stony Brook University, having previously worked as the director of athletic bands at Stony Brook for almost seven years. Leddy earned his Bachelor’s of Music in Music Teacher Education at SUNY Potsdam, and his Master of Arts at Stony Brook University. In his free time, he also volunteered as a Jazz Day chairman.
Mallory Rothstein ’15: BA, Psychology
Mallory graduated from Stony Brook University in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a minor in Business Management. She currently works for Google as an Administrative Business Partner, but has worked at Henry Schein, traveled to 18 countries, and works to enact change both locally and globally. She has worked to raise breast health awareness, to engage young people to make a positive difference, and to bring youth together from around the world to enact local change.
