J.D. Allen, a journalism lecturer at Stony Brook’s School of Communication and Journalism and assistant news director at WSHU Public Radio, will serve a one-year term as vice president of the Press Club of Long Island (PCLI).
The Press Club of Long Island is one of the nations’ largest chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists, with members across Nassau and Suffolk counties.
“I look forward to serving PCLI this year,” said Allen. “Organizations like PCLI and the Society of Professional Journalists support educating the next generation of journalists and high standards of ethical reporting — all endeavors that have always been important and seem more important than ever now.”
Brendan J. O’Reilly, features editor of The Express News Group, was elected president of the press club.
Allen also serves as faculty advisor to the Stony Brook student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, which was restarted on campus during the 2020-2021 academic year.
Allen has taught journalism classes at Stony Brook since 2019. An SBU alumnus, he was WSHU’s first news fellow to launch the local NPR member station’s Long Island Bureau in 2016, which is now campus. He returned to WSHU in 2019 after reporting on communities in Long Island, Massachusetts, Vermont and Connecticut. Allen became its assistant news director in 2020.
Allen graduated from Stony Brook with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and sociology in 2016. He has a master’s degree in communication and journalism innovation from Syracuse University Newhouse.
