June 28, 2012–The 2012 Stony Brook Alumni Association Scholarship Golf Classic, an annual event, raised more than $40,000 to support student scholarships and awards at the University. Nearly 100 Stony Brook alumni and friends attended the outing at the Willow Creek Golf Club in Mount Sinai, NY on June 18.
Since its inception, the Scholarship Golf Classic has raised over $220,000. “The Alumni Association is proud to provide over $30,000 in student scholarships and awards each year that enrich the lives of our exceptional students,” said Dr. Sherry Sussman ’91,’95, President of the Alumni Association. “Money raised at the Scholarship Golf Classic ensures the future of our scholarship program.”
Two of the 21 awardees this year, Sarah Khan ’12 of Roslyn, NY and Kristina Macaruso ’12 from Hopewell Junction, NY attended the Association’s scholarship dinner after the outing. Khan noted, “Winning the “Legacy Award” was a nice way to honor my dad (Asad ’83) who encouraged me to come to Stony Brook and also to acknowledge me for all my involvement in the Stony Brook community.” The family legacy continues this fall when Khan’s brother Ali will be a freshman at the University and Sarah continues her studies as a student in Stony Brook’s School of Dental Medicine.
“Sarah and Kristina are great examples of the caliber of students here at Stony Brook that the Alumni Association recognizes each year,” said Alumni Relations Executive Director Matthew Colson, “and it’s our hope awardees remain engaged with their alma mater in ways that benefit the students who follow in their footsteps.”
