2013 Golf Outing on June 17 Raised Over $40,000 for Student Scholarships and Awards
June 25, 2013 – The Stony Brook University Alumni Association will donate $125,000 to establish the ‘Seawolves for Life Alumni Scholarship Fund’ to benefit scholarship support for undergraduate students at the University. The gift was matched in full by the Simons Foundation Challenge, creating a $250,000 philanthropic impact. The scholarship was created for the highest performing students who show the greatest financial need.
Sherry Sussman, MD ’91, ’95, Immediate Past President of the Stony Brook Alumni Association, who received her undergraduate degree from Stony Brook and is a graduate of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine, is excited for the scholarship’s impact.
“One of the goals of the Alumni Association is to enhance the lives of our current students. We’re extremely proud to have created the ‘Seawolves for Life Scholarship’ and we’ve doubled the impact that this scholarship will have on undergraduate students through the transformational generosity of the Simons Foundation,” said Sussman. “We hope that this Scholarship opens doors for students just as the University has done for so many of us alumni.”
The $125,000 gift was generated primarily by proceeds from the Alumni Association’s annual Scholarship Golf Classic. The 2013 Golf Classic on June 17 at Willow Creek Golf and Country Club, Mt. Sinai, New York, was attended by over 100 alumni and friends and raised over $40,000 for both the new Scholarship and other student awards.
Scott Middleton, Esq.’84, another Past President of the Stony Brook Alumni Association, is equally thrilled to have the opportunity to pay it forward to a student currently making their mark at Stony Brook. “The ‘Seawolves for Life Scholarship’ is an important step for the Association. We are now in a position to demonstrate to our future alumni the importance of staying involved and giving back to our University,” said Middleton. “The Alumni Association is now able to lead by example when expressing the importance of philanthropy.”
The Scholarship will be awarded to two new students this coming fall. The ‘Seawolves for Life Alumni Scholarship’ will cover close to fifty percent of tuition for both students each year.”Our alumni understand the importance and value of public higher education,” said Dexter Bailey, Vice President of University Advancement. “Attracting and supporting the most talented, deserving students, will also enhance the value of their own degrees.”
