Li to Join SoCJ, Alda Center

Wenbo Li

Wenbo LiWenbo Li will join the Stony Brook community as an assistant professor of science communication at the School of Communication and Journalism and Alda Center for Communicating Science.

Li, a doctoral candidate from The Ohio State University, brings expertise in health communication and social media to Stony Brook.

“In only a few years, Wenbo has built an impressive research portfolio in two significant areas of science communication, and we are delighted to welcome him to our team,” said Laura Lindenfeld, dean of the SoCJ and executive director of the Alda Center. “Health communication is an urgent need for communities and individuals around the world and increasing numbers of scientists are curious about how to effectively engage people on social media channels. Wenbo combines these two vitally important areas in new and innovative ways.”

Li will contribute to a growing portfolio of research at the School and Center, and work collaboratively across the campus to support interdisciplinary research efforts. He will also mentor and support students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, particularly in the School’s growing science communication graduate programs.

His research focuses on how social media influences individual and social change, with particular attention to how social media can impact health and racial disparities.

He has published papers in a variety of peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, Journal of Health Communication, Ethnicity & Health, and New Media & Society, among others. He has co-authored a book chapter that will be published in The International Encyclopedia of Health Communication. He has a background in journalism, covering international business and technology for a variety of publications in Beijing, including Bloomberg Businessweek.
