Institute for AI Driven Discovery launches May 9

The new Institute for AI-Driven Discovery and Innovation at Stony Brook University will celebrate its official launch on Thursday, May 9, with an event at Bloomberg’s Global Headquarters in Manhattan. Hosted by Fotis Sotiropoulos, Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the evening will include remarks from:

  • Samuel L. Stanley Jr., President of Stony Brook University
  • Kristina Johnson, Chancellor, State University of New York
  • Gideon Mann, Head of Data Science in the Office of the CTO, Bloomberg L.P.
  • Steven Skiena, Director of the Institute for AI-Driven Discovery and Innovation
Professor Terrence Sejnowski

Terrence Sejnowski, author of The Deep Learning Revolution, will deliver the keynote address. Professor Sejnowski is the Francis Crick Professor at The Salk Institute and is Director of the Crick-Jacobs Center for Theoretical and Computational Biology. As one of only three living scientists to be elected to the Institute of Medicine, the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Inventors, his research in neural networks and computational neuroscience has been pioneering.

“Artificial intelligence is ushering in a new era in human evolution impacting every aspect of our lives and redefining the very essence of human nature,” according to Dean Sotiropoulos. “Universities must be at the forefront of developing new AI technologies, tackling their societal and ethical impacts and educating the workforce of the future. The Institute for AI-Driven Discovery and Innovation is positioning Stony Brook University at the leading edge of these efforts.”

The Institute was established with two grants totaling $4.5 million from SUNY’s Empire Innovation Program. The funding will be used to recruit world-class faculty researchers in artificial intelligence and cybersecurity to drive a vision of Human-Machine Symbiosis based on the idea that AI technology should amplify human intelligence instead of replacing it. The AI Institute will serve as a hub for the AI research effort at Stony Brook University and fuel the workforce for the AI-driven economy of the future through programs ranging from core tech to science communication, technology policy, and entrepreneurship programs.

The launch will be held:

Thursday, May 9, 2019, 6:15 pm to 8:30 pm
Bloomberg L.P.
731 Lexington Avenue
New York, NY 10022

Refreshments and time for networking will be included in the program. Advanced registration and a government-issued ID are required. For more information and to register, visit
